Record of lands to be patented in the town of Cahawba, 1822-1835.

The first sales of land in the town of Cahaba (or Cahawba) began in 1819 May. The land was granted to the State of Ala. by the U.S. government for the purposes of establishing a "seat of government" for the State. This volume consists of transcriptions of letters confirming the sale of land in the town of Cahaba. The letters are signed by the Ala. Secretary of State for the Governor and attest that the land has been fully paid for and requests that a patent be issued. Each letter contains the name and residence of the purchaser, the number of the lot purchased and each letter grants title to the land to the purchaser and his/her heirs. These records document the development of the town of Cahaba and provide information on the sale of land in one of Ala.'s early capitols.
